Three Steps on How to Install Tapered Roller Bearings Properly

2016-06-30

Tapered roller bearings are separable bearings. The inner and outer rings are separated. You can press the inner ring retainer assembly on to the shaft. When you press the sleeve, you should place one end of the sleeve on the end face of the outer ring and not on the sloping raceway surface.

People generally use tapered roller bearings in pairs. And three aspects are very important during installation: Selection and coordination of tapered roller bearings; adjust the axial clearance; test the bearing running and detect the temperature.

Selection and coordination of tapered roller bearings

The outer ring of the tapered roller bearing and the seat hole of the bearing seat should not adopt an interference fit. Because if doing so, it may change the contact angle of the bearing and cause uneven load distribution and temperature rise. Therefore, the inner and outer rings of the bearing must be matched with the installation of the journal and the bearing seat hole.

Adjust the axial clearance

When installing tapered roller bearings, adjust the nut on the journal, the thread on the washer, the hole in the bearing seat, or adjust the bearing clearance by pre-tensioning the spring. The working conditions determine the axial clearance of the bearing, the distance between the bearing, the shaft and the bearing material. For high-load, high-speed tapered roller bearings, the impact of bearing temperature on the axial clearance must be considered when adjusting the clearance. Reducing the gap may lead to an increase in temperature. In other words, the axial clearance should be adjusted to be larger.

For low speed bearings, no clearance or preload mounting should be applied. The purpose is to make the roller and tapered roller bearing raceway contact well, so that the load is evenly distributed. To prevent the roller and raceway from vibration shock damage. After adjustment, use the micrometer to detect the size of axial clearance.

Test the bearing running and detect the temperature.

In order to make good contact between tapered roller bearing and raceway and to get proper axial clearance. After installing the tapered bearing and adjusting the clearance, you can perform the test run and temperature steps.

The method is to run at low speed for 2-8 minutes, then run at medium speed for 2 hours, and then gradually go to high speed. The test run time at each speed should not be less than 30 minutes. The rate of temperature increase should not exceed 5 degrees Celsius per hour, and the final stable temperature should not exceed 70 degrees Celsius.

In addition, in the installation and adjustment of tapered roller bearing clearance, the tapered roller must be in good contact with the inner ring large retainer, which is important.
